“Bye Buddy, hope you find your dad!”
One of everyone’s favorite lines in the movie Elf is when Mr. Narwhal rises from the icy sea and says goodbye to his friend Buddy in the classic holiday movie, Elf. Here is a ice cream float inspired by Mr Narwhal and that famous and often quoted scene in Elf.
The narwhal is a unique species of whale sporting a single tusk that can grow to 10 feet, earning it the nickname “unicorn of the sea.” Found in cold arctic waters, it’s right at home in these boozy or not ice cream floats. This recipe is from The Unofficial Elf Cookbook by Jackie Alpers.

Ingredients
- 1 package royal blue candy melts
- 2 –3 Tbsp vegetable shortening
- Royal blue sanding sugar as needed
- 4 flat-bottomed cake cones
- 8 chocolate chips
- ½ cup blue and white sugar sprinkles mixed with silver star edible glitter
- 1 quart blue or purple ice cream or sorbet
- 1½ oz aged rum, optional
- 4 bottles Jones Berry Lemonade or other blue soda
Instructions
- Place the candy melts in a deep microwave-safe container. Heat at 50 percent power for 30 seconds, stir and repeat. Stir in the vegetable shortening and heat for an additional 30 seconds at 50 percent power.
- Dip each cone into the container of melted candy, tilting the container and turning the cone to coat completely. Sprinkle with sanding sugar. Place upside down over the top of a thin-necked bottle, then press on two chocolate chips each for eyes and let dry completely (they will drip a bit).
- Meanwhile, assemble the rims. Pour about ½ cup of the remaining melted candy onto a small plate large enough to fit the rim of a mug. Fill a second small plate with the sprinkle mixture. Dip each rim in the melted candy, then press it straight down into the sprinkles. Set the mug upright and let dry (about 30 minutes).
- Add 2 large scoops of ice cream to each mug. Add the rum, then carefully pour in the soda to fill. Invert the ice cream cone on top of the ice cream and gently poke a straw through the bottom of the cone to create the tusk. Serve immediately.
